Zac's Post

Bad Language
No I'm not talknig about swearing and cursing I'm talking about people saying things like 'I aint no girl!' instead of 'I am not a girl'. Also when people say 'Can I talk to Zac please?' sure, it sounds OK but really the definition of can is "have the ability to" hereby making the sentence 'Do I have the ability to talk to Zac please?' and sure unless you have vocal problems you would be able to talk.
I'm not too fussy with many of the stated Phrases but one thing that I cant stand to hear is 'Retard'. It is a mental disorder not 'Retarded'. im sure that many poeple dislike this saying too.
What do you think? What is another thing that people say that you don't agree with?

I think I understand what you are saying Zac, In some cases that kind of language can be quite annoying when people are doing it frequently and on purpose to fit in with other stereotypes but I can also understand if you are talking you kind of get a bit lazy and it’s just easier to talk that way so I think that it is acceptable to talk like that in day-to-day conversations with your mates but seriously, you shouldn’t make a habit of it because it just sounds sloppy and disrespectful if you are speaking to an adult

To tell the truth is it killing anyone. I mean it’s not like it’s the end of the world. Sometimes you should use the correct term like when you’re talking to teachers or adults but is it really that bad. Next minute people will be walking around with there pinkies out. Come on do you talk to your friends like "Excuse me may you please pass me the container of cookies” or do you say"Yo bro pass the cookies" So really it’s not hurting anyone unless there allergic to slang.

I agree with you Zac,it does make more sense to speak the way you mentioned. But still you hear people talking the wrong way all the time.I think when you are talking with your friends you dont really think about good english and they dont realise so it is ok then. But if you are talking in front of a group of people in a formal event or in class you should remember to speak the right way.

Languge has came a very long way from thou are not a girl to I'm not a gril and now What ya talken abOut I'm not a F++++++ girl. Now the languge has came to slang Even now the langaguge respect has moved so much even little children start swearing at the teacher and their family members. why just the other day at the warehouse a 5 year old boy wanted a toy and his mother sweard at him . So could the bad slang and swearing come from our parents?

Calvin, Im not really sure you get what Zac is saying. I think he is refering more to the grammatical correctness of language as oposed to slang which you refer to. I certainly agree that adults have a big influence on how young people talk. My advice is always use your manners and you won't go far wrong.

I always use "please may I" rather than "can I" simply because I think it is manners, but thanks Zac for making me feel a little more superior in terms of my grammar. You are absolutely right "Can I" actually means do I have the ability to... Great post.

Jordan, in your comment you implied that I say yo bro pass the cookies instead of Excuse me may you please pass me the container of cookies.
In fact I don't say either of those.
Firstly, I only say excuse me if I do not already have my attention. Secondly I don't say 'yo bro', I say 'hey'. And thirdly I don't usually say please on an informal occasion to my friends.
I think you exaggerated a bit there.
And also no it won't kill anyone but it sure can be annoying when someone says something incorrect over and over.

I think it is all rite to talk lazy because it makes it a lot quicker to talk and txting. If you are having a convocation to an adult you need to talk like an adult not like we do at school. I think we should just use proper language from next year

Mike, I agree with what you are saying that formal language has a time and a place. I'm not sure that students use too much slang with teachers at school though. Teachers model correct grammar most of the time, unless it is a more relaxed setting where student interaction is more casual. (Please use word to publish your comments. There are a lot of mistakes with spelling!) Keep checking the Blog though, well done.

Zac your comment does not really say anything to me.
But what i can tell you is that its how these trends go around to cause language like this. The trends are like
hip hop or rap songs so the language from them is used around schools. I reckon that there is no problem of slang language
